Othello, a Moor and mercenary for the Venetian army, secretly marries Desdemona, the daughter of a powerful senator. Othello's ensign, Iago, envious of Othello and enraged at being passed over for promotion, vows to destroy the Moor and cunningly uses his position to plant seeds of jealousy and doubt in Othello's mind about his wife's fidelity. One of the great tragic masterpieces from Shakespeare's canon, this gripping study of the power of jealousy, evil, and innocent purity delivers a trio of unforgettable characters -- the tormented Moor, Othello; the consummate villain, Iago; and the guileless victim, Desdemona. This passionate, gripping drama remains one of the world's most timeless and universal tales of love and betrayal.
